New Owners Prepare to Reopen John Barleycorn Tavern in Owego
The village of Owego's iconic John Barleycorn Tavern should be back in business soon.
The popular gathering spot at 216 Front Street, which closed its doors nearly six months ago, could open its doors within the next couple of weeks.
Members of the Eschler and McNamara families announced plans to acquire the business last March.
Stephen Eschler said the sale closed on July 9. Renovation work inside and outside the tavern has been underway in recent weeks.
Eschler said there's been "slow, steady" progress in getting the place ready to reopen. He said the Barleycorn is "just an Owego institution and we'd like to keep it that way."
Eschler expressed hope the tavern could be operating under the new ownership and management by the first of October.
Barbara Dunnigan, the previous owner, decided to retire after operating the Barleycorn for many years.
