Binghamton officials are talking with representatives of companies that have expressed interest in locating to a business park that's failed to meet expectations.

Mayor Richard David said on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program that there is "the potential for several big announcements" for development at the Charles Street site "in the very near future."

David added, "there's a series of negotiations underway for multiple major development projects there that will result in tens of millions of dollars worth of investment and significant jobs."

The mayor said he expects one announcement "will definitely be this year, possibly another one will be this year as well."

David said there is "a lot of interest" in the First Ward location which has been billed as a "state-of-the-art urban technology park."

The Binghamton Local Development Corporation recently acquired the business park site from the Broome County Industrial Development Agency.

David said he hopes that "a year from now, there will be two major initiatives" underway at the property bringing additional jobs to the city. He declined to elaborate on the prospective projects.

When the business park development was announced in 2007, state and local officials predicted it would be home to up to six businesses creating hundreds of jobs.

Emerson Network Power was the only company to operate at the site. The company shut down its Binghamton operations three years ago. SaveAround relocated its city offices from Front Street to the Charles Street site last year.
