A Northeastern, Pennsylvania University that has trained dozens of Twin Tiers teachers through the decades could be merging with two other universities.

According to the Associated Press, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is considering revisions that would involve merging six of the state's 14 universities into two new institutions.  One of those six schools targeted for merger is Mansfield.

AP reports officials released planning documents on April 26, two days ahead of an expected board vote on a revision plan.

On April 28, the panel voted almost unanimously to move ahead with the revisions would starting a 60-day public comment period.  A final vote would be scheduled for this summer.  If the proposal gains final approval, the plan would be implemented in 2022.

Chancellor Dan Greenstein has said that some of the universities in the system just aren't sustainable without a radical change in operations.
