A man died after the kayak he was in capsized on the Chenango River in Chenango Forks.

According to New York State Police, troopers were sent to the river around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities say the man's body was found a short time later.

The man was traveling on the river with a group of people when the kayak capsized. His name was not released because his relatives had not yet been notified.

State police were assisted by the Broome County Sheriff's Offfice and several fire departments.

WBNG reported a group of 20 kayakers had entered the river at Chenango Forks. Two kayaks capsized. One person was rescued but the other person died.

A second water rescue operation was launched a short time later in the river at Port Crane.

Three kayaks apparently capsized in that incident but no injuries were reported.
