I think I have an unusual addiction. It's an addiction to maps. When I find myself bored, many times, I'll log onto the ol' World Wide Web and open up Google Maps.

When I was younger (many, many years ago), I thought it would be so cool if there was a way to see the world without having to travel. Well, with all the map programs and street view sites, we have that option.

I really enjoy checking out street views throughout the USA, along with other countries of the world where street views are available.

Recently, I was looking for directions for a day trip in New York State, and as I zoomed in closer, I found many small towns and villages that I'd never heard of, even though I've lived in the Empire State most of my life.

So, I thought it would be fun to ask a question on social media - "How well do you know New York State? Name a town that probably most New Yorkers have never heard of.' Well, the responses came in droves.

According to Google, New York State comprises 62 counties, with a total of 62 cities, 933 towns, and somewhere in the range of 532 to 556 incorporated villages. That's a lot of communities!

As for your responses, I noticed many towns and villages mentioned, most of which we already know exist, so I took a deep look at the places our readers mentioned that I wasn't familiar with.

Here's a sample of some of those New York State towns and villages that I've never heard of, and maybe you haven't either.

In July of 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women’s rights convention ever to be held in the United States was held in Seneca Falls, New York. That convention would change the course of history for women's rights, including being the foundation of the fight for women to be given the right to vote.
