Johnson City Patrolman Lou Cioci is being given the nation’s highest award for valor.

Cioci shot the man who killed Johnson City Police Officer David, “D.W.” Smith March 31, 2014 outside of a medical office building near Wilson Hospital.

President Barak Obama is presenting the Congressional Medal of Valor to Cioci in a ceremony at the White House.

Officials say the medal is presented to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage regardless of their own safety in order to save or protect life.

Smith was killed in the line of duty after responding to a report of a deranged man at a medical office.

Cioci also responded to the scene and encountered James Clark who reportedly fired at officers.

Cioci shot Clark, who later died while being treated at Wilson Hospital.
