West Corners Man Stabbed in Labor Day Laundry Dispute
A laundry room argument in a town of Union apartment complex ended with one resident stabbing a neighbor in the chest.
Two witnesses to the attack at the Bornt Hill Apartments in West Corners rushed to provide assistance to the injured man.
Broome County sheriff's deputies also aided the victim by applying direct pressure and using a chest seal until medics arrived at the scene.
Authorities said the Labor Day assault occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in the laundry room of the 30-unit apartment complex off Route 17C.
The stabbing victim - whose name was not released - was lying on the ground of a parking lot when sheriff's deputies arrived. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he was reported in serious condition after undergoing surgery.
Officials said 32-year-old Janzer Canelo, who lives in the apartment complex, was taken into custody by state troopers near the scene. The knife used in the attack was recovered.
Canelo was charged with first-degree assault, a felony count alleging intent to cause serious injury with a weapon.
Witnesses said the men had been involved in some sort of "ongoing dispute over laundry."
Canelo was arraigned and ordered held at the Broome County Jail in the town of Dickinson.
