The City of Binghamton Police say they will be stepping up patrols of the site of the construction of the new Vestal Greenway project while the New York State Department of Transportation Director is urging people to stay out of the work zone.   City Police say there have been recent incidents of vandalism and trespassing and are telling people to refrain from walking and/or biking on the areas under construction until the project is complete.

The police posted the Public Safety Announcement to Facebook but did not elaborate as to the nature of the vandalism that has been discovered in the part of the construction zone that runs roughly from the Vestal town line to the Pennsylvania Avenue exit from Route 434, past the MacArthur school on the South Side.

In a separate announcement, D.O.T. Region 9 Director Thomas Wiser urges the public to heed warning signs and barricades on the Vestal Parkway.

Wiser says barricades and signs are in place to protect the public until work on the Greenway mixed-use bicycle and pedestrian path is complete.

The D.O.T. acknowledges that many section of the path may appear to be safe for use, but until the barricades and signs are removed, those areas should not be considered open and safe.

The construction of the multi-million dollar pathway connecting Binghamton University to the downtown Binghamton businesses is expected to continue well into 2023.

The D.O.T. says “Traveling on incomplete sections of the path could delay completion and/or result in personal injury, not only to those who violate the boundaries but to those working in the area.”
