Suspicious Fire Tears Through Downtown Binghamton Houses
Binghamton firefighters battled a fast-moving blaze that erupted in an abandoned building and spread to a neighboring structure.
The fire started in a two-family house at 124 Henry Street. It was reported shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday.
The two-story wood frame building was engulfed in flames when the first police officer arrived at the scene. The fire quickly spread to the rear of a neighboring house at 126 Henry Street.
A man who had been inside the second building made it out safely.
The building where the fire originated was mostly consumed by the blaze. The 3-story structure to the east sustained extensive damage.
Mayor Jared Kraham told WNBF News no injuries were reported.
The fire started in a building that was next door to an abandoned structure that had burned in an arson blaze on February 21.
The mayor ordered the emergency demolition of the two buildings damaged by Thursday's fire because they posed a safety hazard.
Isaac Anzaroot owned the building where the latest fire started, as well as the one next door. The properties were to be transferred to the city of Binghamton under a settlement with Anzaroot that was announced last December.
Kraham said the properties included under the settlement are still owned by Anzaroot because the legal process hasn't been finalized.
