Suspect Charged in Early-Morning Shooting in Endwell
An Endwell man was being held at Broome County Jail following a dispute that ended when he allegedly shot another person.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies were sent to an apartment complex at 101 Hooper Road in Endwell around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Police had been called to investigate a report of shots fired.
When deputies arrived, they found an injured man on the front lawn of an apartment building. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The man was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. He was listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery Saturday morning.
Sheriff's deputies took 25-year-old Jeffrey Gates of Endwell into custody at the scene.
Investigators determined the shooting occurred a result of an "ongoing dispute" between Gates and the other man that culminated in the shooting.
Gates surrendered to deputies. The pistol believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered.
Gates was charged with first-degree assault with intent to cause serious injury with a weapon. He also has been charged with criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment.
Gates was ordered held at the county jail in the town of Dickinson after his arraignment.
The apartment complex where the shooting occurred has buildings that front on Hooper Road, Watson Boulevard and Paynter Avenue.
