Two State Troopers Shot in Susquehanna County
Authorities say two Pennsylvania State Police troopers were shot while responding to a call in northeastern Susquehanna County.
According to WNEP, state police said the shooting occurred after the troopers went to a location on in Thompson township around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Governor Josh Shapiro made the initial public announcement of the incident during an unrelated news conference in Bucks County.
Several law enforcement agencies - including New York State Police - reportedly were sent to the scene in the aftermath of the shooting.
Shapiro said he planned to travel to Susquehanna County to meet with police officials. He said he and his wife "are praying for these brave Troopers, and our thoughts are with their families, friends, and every member of the State Police."
WNEP reported a neighbor had heard "several gunshots." Three police helicopters were seen in the area shortly after the shooting occurred.
The wounded troopers were transported to the hospital for treatment. An official report on the extent of their injuries was not immediately released but a law enforcement source indicated they were in stable condition.
A person familiar with the matter said the shooter was dead although state police were unable to confirm that report.
The town of Thompson is about 30 miles southeast of Binghamton.
