Binghamton parks and recreation department workers have been busy preparing a city ice rink for skating.

The facility at Recreation Park on the West Side is expected to open for the season on Saturday.

Every day this week, city employees have been at the rink near Beethoven Street to prepare the ice.

The process requires patience as layer upon layer is added to develop a good skating surface.

The colder weather of recent days has helped build the ice in the rink, although conditions aren't likely to be optimal when temperatures rise into the 40s and 50s next week.

The ice should be ready for skating in time for Saturday when the park is expected to be crowded with children and adults for the start of holiday season rides on the century-old carousel.

Mayor Jared Kraham said for the next three Saturdays, carousel rides and other activities will be offered at Rec Park to help people celebrate the season. The weekly events will take place between 5 and 8 p.m.

The carousel has been decorated with festive lighting and other seasonal items.
