Construction Starts for Owego Aldi Grocery Store
Workers are busy on the site of the old Treadway Inn conference center building a new Aldi grocery store.
Demolition of the 55-year-old event venue, which began in May, took a few weeks to complete.
Steel, wood and other construction materials were delivered to the site in recent days.
The 19,600-square-foot store on Route 17C should rise quickly in the coming months. The store is expected to open by January, although Aldi officials have not publicly announced a target date.
The store will be the first Tioga County location for Aldi, which is based in Germany. Aldi regional vice president Aaron Sumida has declined to comment on the Owego project.
The company has three stores in Broome County - in Vestal, Johnson City and the town of Chenango.
Aldi has been working to open a store in the town of Owego for several years. The company in 2017 sought approval to build at the site of the Scoville-Meno Auto Plaza to the west of the old Treadway. That plan was scrapped.
Aldi now operates more than 2,000 stores in the United States.
