Norfolk Southern Starts Repair Work on Binghamton Rail Bridges

Repair work is underway on crumbling concrete sections of a railroad bridge in the city of Binghamton.

A report released in August concluded the Norfolk Southern span over Glenwood Avenue had significant structural or safety concerns that needed to be addressed by the railroad.

Crews from Vector Construction of North Dakota have been working on the bridge for the last couple of weeks. The company was hired by Norfolk Southern to perform the repairs.

Project foreman Robert Garrett told WNBF News that all of the concrete columns supporting the bridge structure are being addressed first. Then workers will move to the top section of the span to repair the parapet walls.

Garrett said "it will look like a new bridge when we get finished with it." He said the work on Glenwood Avenue is expected to continue over the next several weeks.

Pedestrians are permitted to walk under the bridge while the repair project is underway. But Glenwood Avenue is closed to vehicular traffic between Clinton and Brown streets.

Mayor Jared Kraham said Norfolk Southern has presented "a detailed plan of action" to fix some of the "worst bridges" in Binghamton.

In a news release, the mayor said he appreciates "the railroad company's responsiveness and willingness to act quickly to make sure its infrastructure is safe."

Repairs on other bridges judged to be in "poor" or "severe" condition are planned for 2024.

Kraham said a full replacement of the Front Street bridge is scheduled for next year.
