From time to time, upgrades of computer systems are a necessary thing; sometimes it's a bit of an inconvenience, but it's just something that needs to be done for the better.

On Monday, November 2, 2026, the New York State Department of Labor began upgrading its decades-old unemployment insurance system. The upgrade began at 5 p.m. and is expected to take from 9 to 12 days, according to the NYS DOL website.

What Does The Upgrade Mean For The Public?

Well, this means that all unemployment services from the New York State Department of Labor are temporarily unavailable and benefits will be delayed. But once the upgraded system is available, New Yorkers using the service must file a claim or certify in the upgraded system to receive all payments due to them.

Virtual Employment Scheduling

Career Centers will be open virtually from November 3 to November 27 to assist customers. To schedule a virtual appointment online, visit the New York State Department of Labor workforce schedule webpage. The NYS DOL notes that the Career Center staff cannot help customers with unemployment insurance questions during these appointments.

Customers will be notified by the New York State Department of Labor once the system has been completely upgraded and ready for operation.

Work Search Reminder

The NYS DOL reminds customers that during this upgrade period, you must continue to complete at least three work search activities each week to meet benefit requirements.

Customers will need to submit the work search activities in the upgraded system when certifying for benefits. For more information about Work Search requirements, visit the NYS DOT work search webpage.
