New York State is taking steps to make sure people enjoying outdoor concerts this summer are doing so legally and responsibly.

The Department of Motor Vehicle Investigators are conducting enforcement initiatives, dubbed “Operation Prevent”, to stop the use of fake identification to purchase alcohol at summer concerts.

Sweeps are being conducted at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, CMAC in Canandaigua, the Lakeview Amphitheater in Syracuse and other locations where underage concertgoers are likely to gather.

In addition to investigators from the DMV, officers from the New York State Police, investigators from the New York State Liquor Authority, State Parks Police and local law enforcement will be checking IDs of people at concerts during the popular warm-weather entertainment season.

Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Mark J.F. Schroeder says while modern computer technology and creativity can result in pretty good knock-offs of New York State driver licenses and other in and out-of-state identification, “Our investigators are experts at detecting fake IDs.  It may look realistic to you, but they know how to spot the telltale signs of a fraudulent document.”

The State Liquor Authority Chairman, Vincent Bradley points out that underage drinking leads to reckless behavior that can result in dangerous and lifelong consequences.  Often the problems arise with drunk and impaired driving.

Customers under the age of 21 found to be using fake or someone else’s ID to buy alcohol can be ticketed and their license can be revoked for a minimum of 90 days or up to one year.
