A new eatery is expected to open soon at the former Perkins Restaurant & Bakery in Apalachin.

The Perkins operation on Route 434 opened in July 2017 in a newly-constructed building next to a Comfort Inn. The restaurant closed suddenly in October 2021.

Beth Ann Smith, a Georgia woman who operated the Perkins location, did not say why the place went out of business barely four years after it was launched.

Efforts to sell the 4,800-square-foot building in Apalachin had been unsuccessful for a couple of years.

A real estate listing had indicated the restaurant's kitchen and appliances had cost $529,000 when they were installed. An ad for an auction called for a starting bid of $200,000.

The property finally was sold this summer. People familiar with the transaction identified the buyer as Bob Stanley from St. Louis, Missouri.

Renovation work at the former Perkins restaurant started last month. Efforts to contact Stanley for information on his planned business were unsuccessful.

The future restaurant will be called "Chef Stanley's." It is expected to feature a menu that will include seafood, steak and pasta.

Those working on the renovation of the building said the new eatery should open by the end of this month.
