National Pipe Renovating Felix Roma Bakery for Endicott Expansion
An iconic bakery building in Endicott will soon have a new use after its recent acquisition by National Pipe and Plastics.
The expansion project could result in dozens of additional jobs for the company, which produces PVC pipe at its manufacturing facility on Mills Avenue.
The Felix Roma & Sons - once considered the largest bakery in the Southern Tier -ended production at its South Page Avenue bakery on May 27 last year.
National Pipe and Plastics purchased the three-acre site for just over $1 million in February.
Company president Matt Siegel told WNBF News renovation work has started on the former bakery to bring the building up to standards for a small pipe fabrication shop.
The most obvious change to the property so far was the removal of a tall silo next to the building. That structure - which could hold 60 tons of flour - was taken down a couple of weeks ago.
Workers also have been busy at the site installing a below-grade transformer near the spot where the silo had stood for several decades.
Asbestos remediation work was recently done at the site. Natural gas and water upgrades at the building are planned as part of the planned renovations.
Siegel estimated about 30 new jobs could be created as the result of the expansion project. He said National Pipe and Plastics now employs between 250 and 300 people at its manufacturing and headquarters buildings near the former Felix Roma site.
