Metro Mattress Suddenly Closes Vestal and Johnson City Stores
Two Broome County locations operated by a Syracuse-area home furnishings chain have gone out of business.
Metro Mattress pulled the plug on its stores in Vestal and Johnson City after a plan to sell the company fell through.
The Metro Mattress store on the Vestal Parkway had been open since 2008. The Johnson City location on Reynolds Road across from the Oakdale Commons started operating in 2014.
The Liverpool-based company had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection just over a year ago. A prospective buyer had been found but the deal wasn't finalized.
A federal bankruptcy court judge has given approval for the closing of dozens of Metro Mattress stores, clearing the way for a liquidation sale.
The Vestal and Johnson City stores were closed October 4. Three large box trucks arrived at the Vestal Parkway location Wednesday to haul away the store's inventory. Bedding and other merchandise remained on display at the Reynold Road store on Friday afternoon.
A couple of disgruntled customers called Vestal police Thursday to complain that the Parkway store was closed when they visited to pick up items they had ordered.
A Metro Mattress official did not return a phone call from WNBF News seeking comment on the situation.
The company's website now is promoting a "Going Out of Business" sale. The site indicates only five stores remain open. They are located in the Syracuse, Rochester and Albany areas.
