Binghamton parks department workers are preparing the ice for the start of skating at Recreation Park on the city's West Side.

Employees started adding water to the rink off Beethoven Street Monday just before overnight temperatures plunged to about 10 degrees.

A crew returned to the park Tuesday morning to add more water to create another layer of ice. They'll continue to build the ice over the next few days before the scheduled Rec Park holiday event on Saturday.

Overnight temperatures in the teens and 20s will help develop a base of ice over the next couple of nights. Projected daytime high temperatures in the mid 30s could affect ice quality.

Skating is one of the featured activities for the weekend park celebration.

Carousel rides, hay rides and musical performances also are planned during the event. Rides in a horse-drawn carriage also will be available.

The holiday party in the park is scheduled to run from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
