Big Johnson City Storage Warehouse Nearing Completion
Construction work on a large storage facility next to the Wegmans store in Johnson City will be finished soon.
The steel framework of the building just north of Route 17 began rising at the site about three months ago. Concrete for the structure's foundation was poured late last year.
The new warehouse will be used by the U-Haul Moving and Storage Center on Field Street.
Justin Camacho, the storage center manager, said the facility is being opened as part of an expansion of the existing U-Box service.
Camacho said the building will be able to accommodate about 500 of U-Haul's moving and storage containers.
Most of the siding on the structure has been installed and the door framing has been completed. The new facility could be operational by the end of this month.
Comacho said the demand for U-Box containers has been growing. He said much of the increased demand locally has been the result of Binghamton University. He noted every summer students need to store their belongings.
The U-Box option has been offered at the Johnson City site since 2018.
The storage containers can be shipped to customers to locations in the region or across the country. The system allows people to move their items without having to haul them in a truck.
