Binghamton police are looking for a man who fired several shots in the parking lot of an American Legion where a young girl's birthday party was underway.
The shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 80 at 76 Main Street.
Police said five 9mm shell casings were located in the parking lot at Main and Walnut streets.
According to detectives, a black man wearing a blue sweat suit fired several rounds at a group outside the American Legion building. Before fleeing the area, two of the men who were fired upon were seen with handguns. No injuries were reported.
The gunfire erupted as a birthday party for a 2-year-old girl was being held on the second floor of the American Legion. About 10 children and 10 adults were at the gathering.
The man who fired the shots had been sitting in a car in the parking lot before he got out of the vehicle. A person familiar with the incident said he pulled out a pistol and started shooting toward the group of men.
The shooter was chased from the scene. Police had the car he left in the parking lot towed away.
After the shooting outside, there was "a lot of screaming and yelling inside" among people who had been at the birthday party, according to the person familiar with what occurred.
Detectives have not released the name of a suspect or a possible motive in the shooting.
The shooting happened five years to the day after 27-year-old Daequan Dickerson was killed in a drive-by shooting near the American Legion building.
