Dozens of employees who work at a Broome County FedEx facility that's been in operation for decades have been told the site will be shut down soon.

The closing of the FedEx Ship Center at 21-23 Link Drive in Kirkwood is part of a major restructuring of the company.

The last dispatch day for the site off Interstate 81 just south of Binghamton is expected to be June 27 with all operations scheduled to end two days later.

FedEx reportedly plans to close more than 475 stations by the end of the year. The move to shut down the sites is part of what the company calls "Network 2.0."

The cost-cutting strategy will consolidate separate FedEx Ground and Express units.

A FedEx spokesperson released this statement about the Kirkwood Ship Center:

As part of our previously announced network transformation strategy, the FedEx facility on Link Drive in Binghamton will close at the end of June. Team members at the facility were notified several months in advance, and certain employees will be offered other roles within the company. These decisions are never taken lightly and reflect our commitment to supporting affected employees – through job placement assistance, relocation aid, or severance, as applicable – while transforming our network and continuing to provide an outstanding experience for our customers.

The spokesperson said the FedEx automated package sorting center on Industrial Park Drive in Kirkwood will remain open. That 470,000-square-foot facility opened in October 2022.

Several other Fed Ex Express ship centers in upstate New York are to be closed this summer. They include sites in Ithaca, Elmira, Syracuse, Utica, Watertown, Plattsburgh and Buffalo.
