Drag Perfomer Assaulted Near Binghamton Police Station
Authorities say two women were arrested after a man who had just finished a drag performance at a downtown Binghamton bar was punched and kicked by a group of people.
According to police, the disturbance occurred Friday around 2 a.m. outside Binghamton City Hall at Hawley and State streets. The scene was a few steps away from the entrance to the Binghamton police station.
The injured man sustained swelling to the face and abrasions in the attack. Police said he refused medical treatment.
Police detained two 18-year-old Endicott women who have been accused of punching and kicking the man. The women, Isis McKinstry and Armony Murphy, were charged with third-degree assault and obstruction of governmental administration.
Investigators said the man who was attacked after he had concluded a drag performance at Legacy Lounge at 20 Hawley Street, across the street from City Hall.
Police said as the man walked away from the bar, seven women who had attended the performance began speaking to him. He then was punched and kicked by the group until bystanders intervened and police officers arrived.
According to a police department news release, the injured man said he did not feel targeted due to his appearance or involvement in the drag performance. The incident is not being investigated as a hate crime at this time.
