More Student Housing for Downtown Binghamton
A major makeover is moving forward transforming an eight-story Binghamton office building into apartments for students.
Centre Plaza at Chenango and Henry streets is being converted into more than five dozen individual units.
The property was acquired by Chenango Holdings LLC in June 2023 for $2.1 million.
Broome County developer James Slocum received approval from the city for 63 apartments with a total of 87 bedrooms.
The residential project will be located in what had been the office tower portion of the building which was opened in the early 1970s.
Centre Plaza had a fairly high occupancy rate for decades but much of the property's office space became vacant during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020
The complex also had some commercial space that was used by various tenants over the years, including The Carlton lounge and The Cave nightclub..
The section of Centre Plaza located west of the main building was home to radio stations WNBF and WQYT from 1973 to 1983.
Future uses for that part of the property have not been determined.
