Broome County to Lease More Space at Oakdale Commons Complex
Lawmakers have approved a ten-year agreement for Broome County government to use more space at a Johnson City mall.
The county will lease about 20,000 square feet at the Oakdale Commons. The deal was approved by the legislature late last month.
The space will be used for a county-administered childcare center. Plans call for the facility to serve about 200 children, including infants and toddlers. Pre-school, pre-K and school-age kids also be served there.
County Executive Jason Garnar said the project was outlined last year when it was announced that the New York state would provide $18 million for a series of new initiatives at the Oakdale Commons.
Other state-supported projects at the site include a 125-unit apartment building and an 85,000-square-foot medical facility to be operated by Guthrie.
Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Garnar said the county is reviewing proposals from companies to run the childcare facility.
Garnar said he expects the space covered by the new lease will be near county offices already located at the Oakdale Commons. Construction likely will start this spring.
In 2019, Broome County leased about 35,000 square feet of space in a section of what had been a Sears store.
