Binghamton Woman Dies After Plunging from Downtown Parking Garage
Binghamton police say a person died of injuries sustained after falling from a city-owned parking facility.
The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the garage at 7 Hawley Street.
A woman reportedly plunged 60 to 70 feet from the parking structure. She landed on the sidewalk.
The injured woman was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
According to city police, the woman was a 23-year-old Binghamton resident. The cause of death was ruled to be suicide. Investigators determined there was "no criminality involved."
People were not permitted to enter the Hawley Street parking garage for a short time after emergency crews arrived at the scene.
The death occurred two days after a fatal assault occurred at the Salvation Army Center for Worship and Service, which is located on Washington Street, next door to the garage.
57-year-old Kevin L. Ray of Endicott died after he was repeatedly stabbed in the neck and shoulder.
Police said 37-year-old Michael W. Brutvan of Binghamton was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the attack, which occurred during a community dinner.
