Complaints Prompt New Signs Along Binghamton-Vestal Greenway
Motorcycles and motorbikes have never been allowed on the Route 434 Greenway in Broome County but some people have been ignoring the vehicle ban.
The $25.4 million pedestrian and bike path linking the Binghamton University campus in Vestal with the downtown district opened in the summer of 2023.
Authorities in the city of Binghamton and the town of Vestal haven't reported significant problems with the 2.5-mile Greenway since construction was completed. But there have been enough complaints about motorized vehicles using the path to prompt the state Department of Transportation to take action.
According to a spokesperson, the DOT installed 12 additional "No Motor Vehicles" signs on January 12 and 13. The action was "in response to complaints from local residents regarding various motorized vehicles" on the Greenway.
The dozen new signs were placed at trail entrances between the Washington Street Bridge and Murray Hill Road.
The DOT released no information about any crashes or injuries related to the use of motorcycles or motorbikes on the path.
The Greenway project was built and completed in two phases with the first section of the path opening in 2018.
