Binghamton University Demolishes Another Johnson City House

Demolition crews have knocked down another apartment house near the Binghamton University Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City.

The two-unit house at 58 Broad Street was torn down by workers from Gorick Construction this week.

The property - which had a full market value of about $100,000 - was acquired by the Binghamton University Foundation for $300,000 last March.

A university spokesperson said demolition of the two-story structure was completed on Wednesday. Some site remediation work is expected to continue through Friday.

For now, the university plans to use the space on Broad Street near Corliss Avenue only as greenspace.

Binghamton University has acquired a large swath of land south of Main Street over the past decade for its pharmacy school and nursing program.

Several residential, commercial and industrial buildings were demolished to make room for the Health Sciences Campus.

Some structures between Corliss Avenue and Main Street were bought by the university for a planned green space project.

University president Harvey Stenger announced plans for a park and a walkway nearly four years ago but work on developing the site has been stalled. Officials have not said when construction on the green space initiative will start.
