Binghamton Pot Business Planned for Old Humane Society Building

A facility used for decades by the Broome County Humane Society may soon become the home of an industrial cannabis business.

The principals of Weed Eater International LLC are seeking approval from the city of Binghamton to set up the operation in a two-story building on the South Side.

The property at 2 Jackson Street now is being used by Lexren Home Improvements.

The state Office of Cannabis Management last year granted an adult-use microbusiness license to Weed Eater International.

Company representatives said they intend to use the facility primarily for cannabis cultivation with "some low-scale processing." They also hope to operate a small retail store on the site.

The 6,400-square-foot building, which is owned by Rohmann Properties LLC of the town of Maine, is under contract to the Weed Eater entity. The site has been listed for sale for $310,000.

Company officials told the city planning commission they would like to close on the property and start a buildout at the site "sometime in April."

The cannabis cultivation business could be operating "within two or three months."

A Weed Eater rep suggested it might be almost a year before the retail portion of the business would be running.

The planning commission is to hold a public hearing on the proposed project on April 1.
