Binghamton Police Chief Zikuski Placed on Administrative Leave
Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski has been placed on administrative leave following an incident involving his girlfriend in Johnson City.
Mayor Jared Kraham announced the move in a news release issued Sunday evening.
The mayor said a review will be conducted in connection with an altercation that happened Friday on Ackley Avenue in Johnson City.
Kraham said a video posted to social media showed an incident involving neighbors. He said Johnson City police responded to the dispute.
According to Kraham, Zikuski was present during the altercation. He was not on duty at the time.
In his statement, the mayor said the Johnson City Police Department "is handling the investigation and filing charges" against the woman seen in the video. Kraham said the woman, who he did not identify, is Zikuski's girlfriend.
UPDATE FROM THE JOHNSON CITY POLICE INVESTIGATION APPEARS BELOW.
Kraham said he placed the police chief on administrative leave - effective immediately - pending a review of the incident.
Assistant Police Chief John Ryan will serve as acting chief while Zikuski is on leave.
Kraham said the woman shown in the video is not employed by the city. But, he said, he's "troubled by her language and the implication that she is in any way above the law because of her personal association with a member of law enforcement."
