A downtown Binghamton grocery store that offers specialty items and gluten-free treats is expanding its operations at a nearby site.

Old Barn Market & Gluten Free Bakery had operated at 214 State Street for nearly eight years. The business closed at that location a few days before Christmas.

Jeff and Karen Allen have been preparing to move to a new location about a block west of the existing store. The new place is expected to open soon at 258 Washington Street.

A new owner recently acquired the building from First Assembly of God Church. The church had operated a café at the site for several years. The building was constructed for Godfrey & Son Music, which opened a store there in 1968.

Old Barn Market will occupy about 3,800-square-feet of space on Washington Street. The Allens say that's much bigger than what existed at the State Street site.

The process of setting up operations at the new location is taking longer than expected. The owners now hope to open the larger operation sometime in March.

The biggest challenge now is increasing the size of the kitchen in the Washington Street building. A contractor has been hired to enlarge the kitchen area.

More space means the store will offer additional items and will have a bigger coffee area than existed at the previous location.
