The Broome County Sheriff’s office is investigating the death in the county jail of a defendant in an upcoming murder trial.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder reportedly has confirmed to WIVT and WBNG TV that Mitchell Lindow, who was awaiting trial in the stabbing death December 2 of 36-year-old David Royes Junior at an apartment on Main Street in Binghamton, was found dead in his cell Friday morning.  Lindow was not believed to have been suffering from any medical conditions prior to being discovered by corrections officers at around 7 a.m.  He reportedly had last been seen alive at 3 a.m.

Reports indicate the 30-year-old from Glen Aubrey was being held in a renovated unit that had formerly been used as a gymnasium while his regular housing unit was getting carpet installed.

Lindow had been charged with first degree murder after Royes was stabbed numerous times at his apartment above a West Side Binghamton business a little over a block west of Binghamton High School.

Police were called to Main Street at around 9 in the morning of December 2 with what had first been reported as shots fired but police sources quickly said there were no shots fired but the former Brooklyn resident had been repeatedly stabbed before the suspect fled the scene.

The stabbing incident prompted four schools in the area to be placed on lockout as police searched for a suspect.

Mitchell Lindow was located a short time later at an Asbury Street address and he was charged with murder.

While being held in the Broome County Jail, Lindow this past June was charged with assault for allegedly punching another inmate in the face several times, breaking his nose and blackening his eye.

Before that, records show Lindow was charged with felony Aggravated Harassment of a Corrections Employee and misdemeanor Obstructing Governmental Administration for allegedly throwing liquid in the face of a female Corrections Officer last May.
