Fire department duty chief Michael Griffis said there was "moderate to heavy fire in the third floor attic area" when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Griffis said the fire was "knocked down rather quickly." He said all residents and pets were able to escape without injury.

Griffis said there was "significant fire damage in the attic" along with some water damage on the first and second floors. He said the building has been condemned because of the extent of the damage.

The Red Cross was called to assist those who lived in the house. Authorities indicated six people, including some children, lived in the home. A dog and a cat also had been inside the residence when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Broome County property records indicate the owner of the house lives in Apalachin.
