An abandoned CVS Pharmacy store in Binghamton is being transformed for a new project.

The Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier has been working for years to develop a supportive crisis stabilization center in Broome County.

The agency acquired the former CVS building at 34 West State Street on Binghamton's North Side for $450,000 in 2023. The CVS store closed in March 2022.

Preparation for construction work has just started at the site in recent days.

Association officials have said the planned facility will serve as an alternative for people in crisis in an eight-county region.

The city planning commission was told the center initially will be able to accommodate five adults and five youth or children patients at a time.

The mental health association indicated the crisis center would be a resource for law enforcement agencies that could reduce the use of hospital emergency rooms.

Under the original plans, the facility would be staffed every day around the clock. The project was approved by the planning commission in 2024.

Andrea Rotella, the president of the association's executive board, told WNBF News the goal is to have the new center open sometime this summer.

The agency has been awarded $1 million in state funding to develop the Binghamton project.

Did Anyone Watch These TV Shows in the 1980s and 1990s?

While you might think “watching while distracted” is a modern habit, even back in the day the TV was just… there, humming along while you did other things. These were the shows that weren’t exactly “must-see TV,” more like “might-see TV” — part of the culture, but you had to wonder: who was actually watching?
