The Broome County District Attorney says a continued crackdown on illegal weapons in the region is sending another repeat offender back to prison.

According to a news release from D.A. Michael Korchak’s office that was sent to local media late in the afternoon on Wednesday, September 21, 32-year-old Tavon Bynum Senior of Binghamton had entered a plea of guilty in Broome County Court to the violent felony of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree.

The plea stems from an August 6th car crash at North Jensen and Vestal Roads.

Vestal police responded to the crash and found Bynum standing outside a damaged Honda Accord.

The District Attorney’s account says authorities reported Bynum appeared to be intoxicated and he tried to run away from the scene on foot as officers approached.

The Vestal Police were able to catch the Binghamton man and take him into custody.

Police said while they were arresting Bynum, they found with an unlicensed and loaded .38-caliber revolver in his pocket.

Bynum is prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm as he has a prior felony conviction for sale of narcotics.  That conviction dates back to 2016.

Bynum is expected to be sentenced to 3 1/2 years in New York State Prison followed by 5 years post-release supervision.  Sentencing is scheduled for December 19.

The District Attorney praised law enforcement officials for their work on the case while vowing to continue to prosecute illegal weapon possession instances in the county.

The D.A.’s office has been issuing several news releases a week with a majority of cases involving weapon possession as at least a component of the crimes ending up in Broome County Court.
