Work to prepare an abandoned town of Union industrial site for redevelopment is expected to start soon.

A 27-acre parcel at 600 Main Street in Westover was cleared about a decade ago. The site - which had been federal government property now is owned by the Broome County Industrial Development Agency.

The complex - which was known as Air Force Plant 59 - was used by Remington Rand and General Electric. It was home to the Broome County operations of BAE Systems until the facility was wrecked by floodwaters in September 2011.

After the 620,000-square-foot facility was demolished, fencing was erected around the property and no one has been allowed to use the site.

A plan to elevate much of the land to make it less susceptible to future flood damage is moving forward.

Stacey Duncan, the IDA executive director, said the agency is preparing site plan information for the town of Union. Approvals are needed to construct a "build-ready" pad for future development.

In an email to WNBF News, Duncan said work on the site could begin by early summer "if all goes well."

Duncan said there have been "high-level conversations" with a manufacturing company for possible use of the Westover location but it's "too early for any commitments."

Town of Union supervisor Rob Mack "a couple" of businesses with a local presence have expressed an interest in the site to expand their Broome County operations.

The Main Street property is located just north of the former Goudey Station generating plant that had been owned by NYSEG.
