Endwell's highest-profile blighted building has been removed, more than three decades after the place was boarded up following an arson fire.

Wrecking crews showed up early Wednesday morning to knock down the long-closed Suds-N-Duds laundromat at East Main Street and Scarborough Drive.

The building had been sitting unused since the blaze on June 5, 1988. The fire was one of a half-dozen arson incidents that occurred in the Endwell neighborhood that spring.

Developer Tim Connolly purchased the property and several neighboring parcels in September 2021. He sat behind the controls of an excavator to take the first couple of whacks at the eyesore, which was located near the town of Union government office building.

Connolly is working on a plan to redevelop the long-dormant five-acre site. He said he views it as an "ideal location" that's "right in the middle of Endwell." He said "we're looking for great things to happen here."

Connolly was joined by town supervisor Robert Mack and other local officials for the removal of the eyesore.

The town is providing $200,000 to help prepare the site for redevelopment.

LCP Group of Vestal began demolishing the first of six vacant buildings last week. One other structure on Scarborough Drive will be taken down over the next few days.
