A popular Tioga County bar and music venue at a location dating back nearly two centuries is on the market.

The Ransom Steele Tavern property in Apalachin has been for listed for sale with an asking price of just under $900,000.

The building at the corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue has had a colorful past. According to a historical marker at the site, a tavern was opened there by Ransom Steele in 1831.

A private school - The Barnaby Academy - was operated there for several years during the Civil War.

Diane Wood of Spirit Bear Realty said the property was first listed in July. She said while the owner, Michael Liberty Jr., is preparing to retire, the Ransom Steele Tavern is continuing to operate.

Liberty acquired the vacant run-down property in 2012. Prior to that, it had housed the Smokehouse Restaurant and the Apalachin Tavern.

After a massive renovation project, Ransom Steele opened in 2016. The venue now is operating Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Liberty could not be reached to comment on his decision to sell the property.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
