The effort to redevelop a former industrial site in the town of Union has received a big boost from New York state.

An $11.3 million grant has been approved for a project to elevate part of the 27-acre parcel in Westover, just outside the village of Johnson City.

Union town supervisor Robert Mack said plans call for raising a section of the property by several feet to turn it into a "shovel-ready" site for a future project.

A 600,000-square-foot complex that was being used by BAE Systems was wrecked by massive flooding in September 2011.

BAE moved its Westover operations to Huron Campus in Endicott. In 2016, $20 million in federal money was used to demolish the flood-damaged building, which had been known as Air Force Plant 59.

Mack previously had said that developers who've expressed an interest in the site had indicated it would be too expense to bring in tons of fill to prepare the property for a new project.

Mack told WNBF News he would like to see a mixed-use residential and commercial redevelopment project for the site.

It's not known when work will get underway to elevate a section of the property.
