Windsor Active Shooter Drill Friday: What to Expect

The Broome County Sheriff's Office will run a full-scale active shooter response training exercise at Windsor High School on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to a public notification posted by Windsor Central School District. The exercise is being conducted in coordination with Windsor School, local police departments, and area fire and EMS agencies.

Why Broome County Is Holding an Active Shooter Drill

The point of the exercise is simple: if a real incident ever happened at a school, everyone involved, police, fire, and EMS, needs to already know how to work together. This drill gives them a chance to run through that response before it counts for real.

What to Expect Near Windsor High School on Friday

Expect a lot of activity around the school on Friday. Marked and unmarked emergency vehicles will be coming and going with lights and sirens on. Roleplayers will be acting as victims and bystanders inside and around the building. The Sheriff's Office also says simulated gunfire, produced with non-lethal training equipment, will be audible inside the school during the exercise. Signs and safety personnel will be posted around the area to make it clear it's a training zone, not an active incident.

Route 79 Traffic Delays and Detours in Windsor, NY

Anyone driving through the area on Friday should build in extra time. The Sheriff's Office is warning of possible temporary traffic restrictions or detours on Route 79 and at intersections around the school, in effect anytime between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Safety Measures: No Students Will Be on Campus

No students will be in the building. This is a closed exercise, and the district and Sheriff's Office both want that point clear: despite the vehicles, the roleplayers, and the sound of simulated gunfire, there's no actual danger and nothing about Friday's activity signals a real emergency.
