
Vestal Man Convicted of Promoting Prison Contraband in Broome County Court
Craig T. Shoemaker, 37, of Vestal, New York, was convicted on all three counts of promoting prison contraband following a jury trial in Broome County Court on June 3, 2026. The verdict was announced by Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti.
Guilty on All Three Counts After Jury Trial
Shoemaker was found guilty before the Honorable Judge Carol A. Cocchiola on one count of Promoting Prison Contraband in the First Degree and two counts of Promoting Prison Contraband in the Second Degree. The jury returned guilty verdicts on all three counts.
Lighter and Tobacco Found on Inmate at Broome County Facility
The charges arose from an incident in September 2025 at the Broome County Correctional Facility in the Town of Dickinson, where Shoemaker was confined. Authorities discovered he was in unlawful possession of a lighter (classified as dangerous contraband) as well as quantities of tobacco.
DA Battisti: Jail Safety Will Be Defended Vigorously
District Attorney Battisti pointed out the importance of maintaining security inside correctional facilities. "Correctional facilities cannot operate safely when individuals attempt to introduce prohibited items into these secure environments," Battisti said, adding that the verdict sends a clear message that conduct undermining jail safety and order will carry serious consequences.
Shoemaker Faces Up to Seven Years; Sentencing Scheduled for July 2
Shoemaker faces a maximum sentence of seven years in state prison. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 2, 2026. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Sarah Dean, with the assistance of Investigator Robert Fimbres, on behalf of the Broome County District Attorney's Office.
