The Montrose Area School District is sounding the alarm over a troubling new TikTok challenge that has made its way into local schools.

In a social media post, Superintendent Christopher McComb addressed growing concerns after students were caught participating in a viral social media trend that encourages the intentional destruction of school-issued Chromebooks.

Students Mimicking Risky Behavior Online

According to McComb, the challenge involves inserting foreign objects into Chromebook charging ports in an attempt to trigger electrical shorts. This reckless behavior has reportedly resulted in smoke, sparks, and, in some cases, a risk of fire. The district has already identified instances of the challenge being carried out within its schools, prompting swift disciplinary actions and a strong warning to the community.

Severe Consequences for Destructive Acts

McComb emphasized that damaging school property in this way not only carries serious disciplinary consequences but also poses significant safety hazards. “The potential fire risk can be deadly,” he stated in the social media post.

The district is urging families to talk with their children about the dangers of following destructive online trends and to reinforce the importance of making safe, respectful decisions both in school and on the internet.

Partnering with Parents to Promote Digital Responsibility

The superintendent called on parents to work in partnership with the district to encourage responsible digital citizenship. Students are being encouraged to speak up if they witness or hear about any involvement in the challenge or similar online behaviors.

If your child sees or hears of any inappropriate behavior related to this challenge - or any other harmful online trend - we encourage them to report it to a trusted adult at school immediately,” McComb wrote.

Keeping Students Safe

McComb closed his message by thanking parents and guardians for their continued support in keeping students safe. The district remains committed to educating students about the responsible use of technology and the importance of thinking critically about what they see and share online.

Latest Viral TikTok Trend Takes Funny Look at Life in the Adirondacks

So whether you're from Halfmoon or Hague; from Troy or Ticonderoga, you should be able to relate to a viral video that takes a humorous and poignant approach to "Life in the Adirondacks."
