If you’ve ever stressed over whether it’s too soon to bring someone home for the holidays, you’re not alone. A new survey says only 38 percent of New Yorkers plan to introduce a partner to the family this season.

That puts us near the bottom of the list compared to the rest of the country. Apparently, we take our time before saying “Meet my parents… and also their two aunts and four cousins.”

Why We Hesitate to Make the Big Introduction

The Matchmaking Company chatted with more than 2,300 people in relationships and asked what goes through their heads this time of year. For many it is nerves. Almost two thirds said bringing a partner home actually makes the holidays more stressful. You’d think it would be sweet, but for many people, it feels like a job interview with candy canes..

Some People Avoid Holiday Introductions Altogether

Sixteen percent of Americans said they wouldn’t introduce someone for the first time during the holidays, which makes sense. There’s already enough pressure with cooking, traveling, and that one relative who always wants to talk about politics. Adding “meet the family” to the list… no thanks.

Family Approval Doesn’t Always Matter

Nearly half of people said they’d bring a partner home even if their family didn’t approve. That’s some bold holiday energy right there. If they’re willing to walk someone through the front door knowing Aunt Linda is ready to judge, they must really like this person.

Yep… People Are Being Romantic in Their Childhood Bedrooms

The survey went there. Almost one in five Americans said they plan on romance with their partner while staying at their family’s house for the holidays. Yes, surrounded by childhood posters and the creaky bed frame that squeaks if you breathe too hard.

Not Everyone Enjoys Their Partner’s Family

More than 20 percent of people dread spending the holidays with their partner’s family. It doesn’t mean they don’t love their person, it just means the family gatherings are… a lot.

What It All Says About New Yorkers

New Yorkers move fast in life, but when it comes to introducing someone to the family during the holidays, most of us hit the brakes. Between stress, mixed feelings, and those big family personalities, we’re careful about when we make that step.
