A new study says New York families pay some of the highest household bills in the entire country. The study found that the average New York household pays about $3,779 every month on things like mortgages, electric bills, gas, water, internet, and other basic costs. That comes to more than $45,000 every year.

Housing Costs Are a Big Reason Why

One of the biggest reasons that New York is ranked so high is housing costs. The average mortgage payment in New York is about $2,315 a month (UGH), which is the fifth highest in the United States. New Yorkers also pay some of the highest alarm and security system costs in the country, averaging about $100 eVERY month.

California Took the Top Spot

California ranked number one for the highest household bills in America. Families there spend an average of $4,193 every month. New Jersey, Hawaii, and Massachusetts also ranked ahead of New York on the list.

Everyday Costs Keep Adding Up

The study looked at many different bills that families deal with every month, including electric, gas, water, trash pickup, internet, insurance, and mortgages. For many people across the Empire State, these rising costs are becoming harder and harder to keep up with, especially as food prices and other expenses continue to climb.
