Upstate New York May See Two Winter Storms Ahead of Christmas

It looks like Upstate New York will see a white Christmas after all.

Local stores are a fury of activity as last-minute storm preparations are underway. Local gas stations are lined with people gassing up their vehicles and filling containers to power snowblowers and plows as Upstate New York waits to find out just how much snow we'll end up with by the weekend.

It seems as though everyone is talking about the big snowstorm for today and tomorrow, but many people aren’t aware that there is a possibility of another winter storm in the days leading up to Christmas.

Brian Donegan, an Upstate New York resident and Senior Digital Meteorologist at FOX Weather tells us that there are early indications that another winter storm could impact Upstate New York sometime between Thursday, December 22, and Friday, December 23.

Donegan said that it’s much too early to even begin to predict timing and snowfall amounts but reminds residents that, “this is simply an early heads-up that another round of snow could potentially mess with travel plans for anyone headed out of town early for Christmas.”

If you’ve been wishing for a white Christmas, you might just be in luck. Donegan explained that a white Christmas is defined as having at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas morning, or falling snow that accumulates at least 0.1 inches on Christmas Day.

As temperatures are expected to stay quite cold through the end of December, Donegan says that it's likely that any snow on the ground between this week's winter storm and next week's possible storm will remain on the ground through Christmas.

Although residents of the Northeast are generally prepared for snow, arctic blasts and dangerous chills are completely different things.

Meteorologists with FOX Weather are also watching for an arctic blast to hit most of the United States this weekend into next week. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing and the wind will bring severely dangerous windchills so as you plan for snow removal and Christmas travel, also plan to bundle up and limit your time outdoors as much as possible.
