If you’re a New York gamer counting down to Grand Theft Auto VI, watch out for online offers promising a chance to play early. Scammers are using fake downloads and websites to steal money, passwords and other information.

The game is scheduled to launch November 19th for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Rockstar Games. Scammers are hoping impatient fans will click before checking whether an offer is real.

There Is No Public GTA 6 Beta or Early Access

Rockstar has not announced a public beta or early access program. Treat messages, ads and websites offering a chance to download or play the game early as scams. Some fake websites use designs and Grand Theft Auto artwork that look real. A download advertised as a game demo could install software that tries to steal saved passwords and other info from your computer.

Be Careful With Cryptocurrency Offers

Some scam sites promise “VIP” access in exchange for cryptocurrency. Others ask you to connect a digital wallet, which could let scammers take money or other digital items. Cryptocurrency payments are difficult or impossible to reverse.

PC and Mobile Downloads Are a Warning Sign

At launch, GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC or mobile version. That means offers for a “GTA 6 PC build” or “mobile beta” should raise red flags. Don’t download files from unfamiliar sites, especially if they ask you to open an installer on your computer.

Check Links Before Signing In

Fake login pages can look like the real Rockstar sign-in page. Scammers use them to steal account names and passwords. If a link asks you to sign in to unlock game content, stop and check the web address yourself. Don’t enter your password on a page reached through a message you weren’t expecting.

Stick With Official Game Stores

Buy or pre-order the game through the official store for your console or a retailer you trust. Be cautious with giveaway posts on YouTube, TikTok and other social media, especially if they ask for your password, payment or cryptocurrency.

Power Up Gaming founder Chris Mawson advises you to watch for fake early access offers and suspicious downloads. A little caution can help protect your accounts and money while you wait for release day.

Spotting And Avoiding Roofing Scams After A Storm

After severe weather, a hailstorm, or a tornado, people are quick to help start the recovery and cleanup process. While getting help from family, friends, and neighbors is easy, you often have to turn to a contractor for the larger work. Don't fall victim to a contractor's scam and lose money with no repairs. Here are the things to look for so that you don't become a storm scam victim.
