A former Broome-Tioga BOCES employee is facing misdemeanor charges following an investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct involving a student.

According to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, the case began after a referral was received from the New York State Child Abuse Hotline on November 12, 2025

Sheriff’s Office Works With BOCES During Ongoing Investigation

Once the referral was received, detectives with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office began an immediate investigation. Authorities say they conducted multiple interviews with students, family members, and BOCES staff and faculty. Investigators also worked closely with Broome-Tioga BOCES administrators as the investigation progressed.

Former BOCES Employee Charged Following Investigation

According to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, following the investigation, Evan J. Thorson, 51, of Endicott, New York, was charged with Child Endangerment and Official Misconduct, both Class A misdemeanors. A warrant for his arrest was issued, along with an Order of Protection through the Town of Dickinson Court.

Suspect Turns Himself In Following Warrant

Authorities say Thorson turned himself in and was processed by law enforcement on Monday, January 5, 2026. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the Town of Dickinson Court.

BOCES Says Employee Was Removed and Student Safety Comes First

Broome-Tioga BOCES Superintendent Rebecca Stone said the district took immediate action once the allegations were brought to its attention.

The individual was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation and is now no longer employed by Broome-Tioga BOCES. Stone emphasized that student safety remains the top priority of BOCES and confirmed continued cooperation with law enforcement.
