1-in-5 New York Couples Rely on Alcohol for Relationship Bonding
I don't know if this will come to you as a surprise or not, but alcohol is playing a much bigger role in relationships than we might have thought.. According to a recent survey, almost 1-in-5 New York couples consider alcohol a big part of their relationship.
In fact, they have made it a cornerstone in their lives together. The average couple is opening up a cold one together about three times a week, So much so, that they make it a regular date night activity.
Over a quarter (28%) of people believe that sharing a drink brings them closer, which suggests that alcohol is seen as a bonding agent in their relationship. Here's a surprise: Almost one-quarter of couples admit to using alcohol to smooth over their disagreements.
Almost the same percentage say they make major life decisions, like moving in together, while under the influence of alcohol. Some say that having similar drinking habits, (around 60%) adds to a sense of togetherness. But, 25% of couples admit to using alcohol as a way to avoid dealing with their problems.
The study raised concerns about whether couples are relying too much on alcohol for intimacy or stress relief, instead of working on healthy things like trust, talking and mutual respect.
Having a few drinks together can enhance the experiences and bring couples closer together. But it might be a good idea for all of us to take a step back and not make it a cornerstone of the relationship.
