Binghamton Plaza Demolition Bid Now Open To Contractors

Binghamton is officially moving forward on tearing down the Binghamton Plaza, and the city wants contractors lined up to do it.

Mayor Jared M. Kraham announced Tuesday that the city is accepting bids for demolition of the long-vacant shopping plaza at 33 W. State Street on the North Side.

"We're advancing plans to demolish the long-blighted and neglected Binghamton Plaza," Kraham said. "...The demolition will be a major undertaking, and contractors will work closely with the city to ensure it is carried out safely, responsibly and in a way that supports positive redevelopment of the site."

Binghamton Plaza Demolition Bid Timeline

The city issued the demolition bid this week, with contractor responses due Wednesday, October 7. To see the full scope of what's being asked of contractors, the bid notice is posted on the City of Binghamton's website.

Colliers Engineering and Design, based in Binghamton, has handled the pre-demolition legwork, including demolition design, environmental testing and engineering, and has developed the bid specifications contractors will use. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has also reviewed the plans to make sure everything complies with the site's environmental constraints.

Not everything on the parcel is coming down. Several outbuildings, including a day care, are excluded from the demolition plans.

Binghamton Plaza Eminent Domain Case Timeline

The city formally took title to the property earlier this year, nearly two years after winning its eminent domain case against the plaza's former owners.

Binghamton Plaza Redevelopment Plans And MKSK Meeting

Redevelopment planning is already underway. The city brought on Rochester-based planning firm MKSK earlier this year to run a feasibility study and help shape a redevelopment plan for the property. MKSK is set to hold a second public meeting this fall to share updates and gather more community feedback, so residents who want a say in what replaces the plaza will get another chance to weigh in.
